Savannah has proven to have many different sides. The historic district holds unmatched historic charm. The architecture varies in style on every one of the 22 blocks in the district and proudly displays numerous historic sites. The best way to see the beauty of this city is on foot. Parking, or lack there-of, is an ever present issue in the city. However, Savannah also offers on of the highest per capita violent crime rates in the country. When walking in the city, the beauty of the historic district converts quickly into slums and projects, so you have to be careful not to wander alone.
The beaches, although somewhat chilled at this time of year, offer beautiful sunrises and a very relaxing atmosphere as long as you where a sweatshirt. Tybee beach, the closest to Savannah, is fairly deserted in the cool air of March.
Some of the best views in the area, I found, were in the towns surrounding Savannah, like Richmond Hill. Sunsets over the marshes blazed the most brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow I think I have ever seen.
The downtown area, River Street and Bay Street, offer the best of the best as far as night-life. River Street boasts famed bars like Wet Willie's, which offers top of the line (as in stronger than normal) daquiri's with the added punch of grain alcohol. Then there is The Bar Bar, which features a large room for dancing, a lounge that reminds you strangely of a fraternity house, and a room full of tables and board games from Yatzhee to Scrabble.
This underground retreat is virtually unfindable if you aren't affiliated with the local crowd. River and Bay Street also offer the rare ability to carry drinks from bar to bar through the streets, as long as it is in a cup, not a bottle. At this time of year, River street is littered with St. Patrick's Day paraphonalia. Savannah holds the third largest annual St. Patrick's Day parade in the country. |
